  • Open Enrollment again? Didn't we just do that???

    Posted by Communications at 10/31/2012
If it seems like you just made your Open Enrollment insurance choices a couple months ago, you're right. You did. So why are you hearing that Open Enrollment for ISD employees is right around the corner again?
It's because the ISD has changed its "insurance year" to match the calendar year. Essentially, the recent Open Enrollment was flexible benefits only, for a "3-month year" from October-to-December. The upcoming, two-week Open Enrollment period in November will be for all benefits, and for the entire 2013 calendar year.
It will be important for you to take the time to go over your choices for both health and life insurance policies. There are many options that provide different levels of coverage and benefits, each with different premium-share and co-pay costs for employees. The choice you make in November for the 2013 insurance year cannot be changed, and making no choice could result in a default election that may not be affordable or may not provide the insurance you really need.
So when you get the email on Open Enrollment from HR, be sure to give it a good, long look! Your elections must be entered in Munis SelfServe no later than November 14.

Halloween is anything but scary around the JCISD...

Employees at the Kratz Center treated Career Center pre-school children as they paraded around the building in their costumes with Halloween bags and student chaperones. Various departments got into the spirit and dressed up themselves: the Finance Dept. used a "numbers" theme, dressing up as dominoes; HR were "Charlie's Angels", with Cheryl Lemons playing the infamous "Bosley";  General Ed. came as the pop novel "50 Shades of Gray"; and Special Education were all the "Good Witches".

If you have photos you would like to  share from your building, please email them to communications@jcisd.org. We'll include them with this post!

  • JCISD second on EEI's Top 10 in energy savings in Michigan

    Posted by Communications at 10/5/2012
The JCISD was second in a recent Top 10 Michigan Clients list put out by Energy Education Inc., a national company used by schools and churches to develop and implement energy savings programs. EEI's top clients are determined by a number of factors. JCISD's 42% overall average performance percentage was second only to Lowel Area Schools' 43%. Jackson Public Schools was 7th on the list with a 34% performance rating.

The ratings and overall savings includes cost avoidance. We can be proud of the efforts of all employees to save energy and energy dollars. A pat-on-the-back is especially owed to our Maintenance and Custodial staff, who have implemented a lot of the changes and the way we operate when it comes to energy use.

  • Dynamic duo keeps the good ship ISD afloat ... for 39 seconds

    Posted by Communications at 10/3/2012

Congratulations go to Special Education Director Richard Rendell and Superintendent Kevin Oxley for being the longest-lasting participants from a local educational organization in the United Way's inaugural Cardboard Boat Race Campaign Kickoff event.

Of course, that isn't saying much. Our dynamic duo still couldn' make it to the starting line without getting soaked.

The Pirates of the ISD lasted just 39 seconds afloat before the first captain of education went overboard ... closely followed by the first mate. While Kevin got back aboard and attempted to complete the race, he quickly discovered a design flaw: The boat could float, it just couldn't go forward or turn very well.

Even still, the good ship ISD outlasted the entry from the Western School District, which sank almost as soon as it got into the water.

Watch the video and you'll see more reasons why we need more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) in our schools today.
