Jackson County middle school and high school students can take advantage of one of the state’s most high-tech telescopes and learn more about astronomy from experienced teachers and university researchers during Astronomy Camp on June 30-July 3, at Camp McGregor. Astronomy Camp is an overnight camp where you will be guided through activities and learn about constellations, sunspots, astrophotography (print and digital), variable stars and much more! The Dahlem Conservancy will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Nature for All Trail on Saturday, June 22, at 1:00 p.m. (7117 S Jackson Rd ). The Meemic Foundation, a non-profit organization created by Meemic Insurance Company, has been providing financial assistance in the form of grants to schools and educators since 1992. Currently, the Foundation is accepting grant applications through the end of June for funding up to $2,500 for fall 2013 programs. Click on the headline above for more information.
Jackson County teachers (6-12) have an opportunity this summer to learn about teaching East Asian studies and receive a stipend, teaching resources and SCECHs through a grant-funded program being offered through Michigan State University and the Asian Studies Center. Eastern Michigan University has moved into the Jackson Area Career Center Commons Area – a move that will benefit Jackson County students and teachers. EMU will continue to offer Educational Leadership and Nursing classes in Jackson County, while offering more competitive dual enrollment rates for Jackson County students. The Jackson Area Manufacturers Association will once again host their popular camps for kids at Camp McGregor and the Jacskon Area Career Center this summer -- the Can Make It! Free GED Prep classes will be held at t Spring Arbor University’s downtown Jackson campus, 113 West Michigan Ave., beginning April 8. Sessions will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-11:30am and 5:30-8pm. The classes are offered through the Jackson Area Career Center’s Adult Career Education program. The 20th annual Learning Fair – one of the area’s largest and longest running and technology fairs – will be returning to the campus of the Jackson Area Career Center on Thursday-Friday, July 11-12. The learning fair is a great learning experience the whole family will enjoy. It provides unique, hands-on opportunities to explore technology and the arts with demonstrations by gifted craftsmen and dynamic companies from Jackson County and Michigan. The University of Michigan will hold its fifth annual CS4HS Summer Workshop for High School Educators on Tuesday-Wednesday, Aug 20-21. Produced in conjunction with Google, the workshop is designed to assist teachers and administrators who teach computer science or want to integrate the study and use of computing into their curriculum.
